Just found out that my work will be featured in a group show at Atlantic Wharf Gallery in the Financial District/Fort Point, titled "Big Picture." Its a Fort Point Arts Community (FPAC) members show that takes place in conjunction with the Fall Open Studios Group Show at the FPAC Gallery. The curator of the exhibition was Randi Hopkins, Associate Director of Visual Arts at the Boston Center for the Arts. Come by the opening reception in November (date TBD; check this page for updates).
The piece I'm showing is the result of a participatory dance painting event I held at Fort Point Open Studios 2013. I divided the canvas into two and created a diptych, and this is one of them. Visitors were welcome to dance/walk/run across my canvas with paint while I played a series of tunes with a band. The resulting marks were the basis for two abstract paintings.
The works hover between being stand-ins for a performance, diagrams, documents, action paintings. While the painting surfaces are "open spaces" welcoming participants, catalysts for communal experiences, the act of dancing with slippery paint on one's feet is awkward and makes one hyper-aware of one's body. A tension is sustained amongst viewers, participants and context- the impossibility of translation and the gains/loses of joining any group drive this work.
I'll be showing with fellow artists: Dirk Ahlgrim, Domingo Barreres, Brian Bishop, Denise Bosco, Jessica Burko, Don Eyles, Dylan Hurwitz, Helen Lee, Amy Baxter MacDonald, Stephen McMillan, Maria Molteni, Andrew Neumann, Pamela Reynolds, Jonathan Sahula, Dorothea Van Camp, Floor van de Velde and Charles Win
